Blue sky over Byfjorden, a tall ship at her berth, and Bryggen from the waterline — the short morning cruise that shows Bergen the way it was built to be seen.
June gave us one of those mornings that make the west coast look like it is showing off. High cumulus, no wind, and the whole of Byfjorden glittering as we came out of the harbour.
Bergen is a city that was built from the sea, and it still makes the most sense from the water. The morning run takes you past the working harbour, the old trading wharves, and — on a good day — some distinguished company at the quays.
And then Bryggen itself, from the waterline — the view that has met every arriving boat for seven hundred years. Most visitors only ever see it from the pavement. It is better from a deck, with the engine barely above idle.
From here the short charters turn west toward Askøy and the islands. Three hours is enough to leave the city completely behind — this morning, nobody was in a hurry to.
